My Findings
I didn’t know what horticulture therapy was, but I knew nature affected me. I found my stress levels decreasing as I spent more time in nature. During my time shadowing Horticulture Therapists in NYU hospitals, I saw how just being around plants, or being outdoors, shifted people’s moods. In both the psychiatric unit and the physical rehabilitation unit, people felt differently after we visited them with our cart of plants. They felt engaged, connected to tell stories, or proud that they did something new, that was unrelated to their medical recovery.
It made me inspired to continue to do this work, and in learning about the science behind it, I know there is a lot more coming for this feild. It does not only matter in hospitals, but also in schools, homes, public spaces, and in all ways we navigate the world.
